For many years past there had been trouble with diphtheria in this hospital, but during the years 1897, 1898, and 1899, there had been so many outbreaks, involving such comparatively large numbers of the inmates, and the wards had been so frequently closed for disinfection, that the committee viewed the situation with the greatest concern, and some even contemplated the closure of the institution and the abandonment?at any rate temporarily?of its work.
